They Are Too Comfortable in the Comfort Zone
Women are often content to do a good job in their current position and sometimes need an external ânudgeâ to consider making a change. Mary Fontaine, an executive with Hay Group, shared with me that she thinks men are more aggressive about seeking broader opportunities much earlier in their career than women. Mary said, âI think women tend to stay in a particular job because they enjoy the mastery of the work until they are very confident and comfortable that they can do the job to a high standard of excellence, while men have a tendency to look for ways to move out of their comfort zone. This can create a problem for women, because if they stay too narrowly focused for too long, people never see them as a candidate for a bigger role.â
This supports my research findings that managers, and even some mentors, see a woman as the subject-matter expert in a certain area. They then make the false assumption that she canât take on a broader role because while she might be technically brilliant, she is considered more tactical than strategic. For example, Sue may be known as an awesome director of research; however, she isnât thought of as a candidate for vice president of research and development because of the nontechnical requirements of that role.
